Joanna drove cross-country with three harps and her Pembroke Welsh Corgi Ginger in the car and arrived safely in Corona, California on August 1. She says a big "HELLO" to all her friends back in Philadelphia. She is enjoying the lovely weather and outdoor musical events. Jade Waterman, now a sophomore plays harp in the Drexel University Orchestra. Following an audition on August 23rd, Maryanne Meyer was appointed Principal Harpist of the Tri-Cities Opera in Binghamton, New York. TCO's 2011-2012 season includes Puccini's Madame Butterfly and Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. Mary Groce is still the harpist (it's been twelve years now!) in the Monet Lounge of the William Penn Inn in Gwynedd, Pa., every Tuesday through Saturday evening (5:30-9:30 P.M.). Emily Klein received an honorable mention at the 2011 Lyon and Healy Awards. Ms. Klein is currently a senior at Rice University studying with Paula Page. Two Philadelphia chapter members were featured at the World Harp Congress over the summer in Vancouver. Helen Gerhold (student of Elizabeth Hainen) and Ruth Boyajian (student of Kimberly Rowe) represented the U.S. in the Focus On Youth concert series. SPARX flute and harp duo (Joan Sparks, flute and Anne Sullivan, harp) have commissioned a new major work from Delaware composer Chuck Holdeman. The three-movement work is titled “sonata scintillante” and uses alto flute and piccolo in addition to C-flute. Premieres will be scheduled in PA and Delaware in early 2012 This summer Anne Sullivan interviewed harpist Mindy Cutcher about her experiences with the Pennsylvania Ballet and in particular about her insights on the Waltz of the Flowers cadenza. Mindy has great suggestions and ideas for learning and performing the cadenza, as well as some funny ballet anecdotes that she shared. Gloria Galante, principal Harpist, Mary Bryson, Harpist of the Divine Hand Ensemble will be featured in a Documentary of about Classical music in the 21st century aired on PBS this year. www.divinehand.net Still room for you at the 19th annual Harpers’ Escape Weekend, which takes places Oct. 14-16, at the Continuing Studies Center on the Douglass campus at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. The 5 instructors include renown Irish harper Gráinne Hambly and Scottish harper William Jackson as well as Kathy DeAngelo, Debbie Brewin-Wilson and Sharon Knowles teaching traditional music by ear. “Harp till you drop’’ is their motto and their successful track record in building repertoire among its participants is based on sending each registrant a CD of the material they’re going to learn 2 weeks before the Weekend. All the rooms are already booked at the conference center, but there is still classroom space for a few more attendees who either want to commute or arrange their own accommodation at a nearby hotel.
